I'm going to show you both sides of the story, please read before you vote. I know it's a lot, so read or scan it to get an idea of both sides. The Myths, and what universal health care will do.
QUOTE
"I suffer no illusions that this will be an easy process. It will be hard. But I also know that nearly a century after Teddy Roosevelt first called for reform, the cost of our health care has weighed down our economy and the conscience of our nation long enough. So let there be no doubt: health care reform cannot wait, it must not wait, and it will not wait another year."
– President Barack Obama, February 24, 2009
QUOTE
Comprehensive health care reform can no longer wait. Rapidly escalating health care costs are crushing family, business, and government budgets. Employer-sponsored health insurance premiums have doubled in the last 9 years, a rate 3 times faster than cumulative wage increases. This forces families to sit around the kitchen table to make impossible choices between paying rent or paying health premiums. Given all that we spend on health care, American families should not be presented with that choice. The United States spent approximately $2.2 trillion on health care in 2007, or $7,421 per person – nearly twice the average of other developed nations. Americans spend more on health care than on housing or food. If rapid health cost growth persists, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that by 2025, one out of every four dollars in our national economy will be tied up in the health system. This growing burden will limit other investments and priorities that are needed to grow our economy. Rising health care costs also affect our economic competitiveness in the global economy, as American companies compete against companies in other countries that have dramatically lower health care costs.
The President has vowed that the health reform process will be different in his Administration – an open, inclusive, and transparent process where all ideas are encouraged and all parties work together to find a solution to the health care crisis. Working together with members of Congress, doctors and hospitals, businesses and unions, and other key health care stakeholders, the President is committed to making sure we finally enact comprehensive health care reform.
The Administration believes that comprehensive health reform should:
* Reduce long-term growth of health care costs for businesses and government
* Protect families from bankruptcy or debt because of health care costs
* Guarantee choice of doctors and health plans
* Invest in prevention and wellness
* Improve patient safety and quality of care
* Assure affordable, quality health coverage for all Americans
* Maintain coverage when you change or lose your job
* End barriers to coverage for people with pre-existing medical conditions
Please visit www.HealthReform.gov to learn more about the President’s commitment to enacting comprehensive health reform this year.

More than 50 percent of Americans believe a public insurance option will increase health care costs, according to a new survey on assertions the White House has called myths.
The national survey, conducted from Aug. 14 – 18, involved a random sample of 600 Americans aged 18 and older living in the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C. Respondents indicated whether or not they believed 19 claims about health care reform, each of which is considered a myth by the White House.
The results could speak to the current partisan debate on a proposed health care overhaul. While overall the majority of Americans said they believe many of the assertions, more Republicans and Independents than Democrats stood by the claims.
"It's perhaps not surprising that more Republicans believe these things than Democrats," said study scientist Dr. Aaron Carroll, director of Indiana University's Center for Health Policy and Professionalism Research. "What is surprising is just how many Republicans – and Independents – believe them. If the White House hopes to convince the majority of Americans that they are misinformed about health care reform, there is much work to be done."
Among the results on items the White House considers myths:
* 67 percent of respondents believe that wait times for health care services, such as surgery, will increase (91 percent of Republicans, 37 percent of Democrats, 72 percent of Independents).
* About five out of 10 believe the federal government will become directly involved in making personal health care decisions (80 percent of Republicans, 25 percent of Democrats, 56 percent of Independents).
* Roughly six out of 10 Americans believe taxpayers will be required to pay for abortions (78 percent of Republicans, 30 percent of Democrats, 58 percent of Independents)
* 46 percent believe reforms will result in health care coverage for all illegal immigrants (66 percent of Republicans, 29 percent of Democrats, 43 percent of Independents).
* 54 percent believe the public option will increase premiums for Americans with private health insurance (78 percent of Republicans, 28 percent of Democrats, 58 percent of Independents).
* Five out of 10 think cuts will be made to Medicare in order to cover more Americans (66 percent of Republicans, 37 percent of Democrats, 44 percent of Independents).
There were exceptions.
Fewer participants believe "myths" regarding the impact of proposed changes on current health insurance coverage. For instance, less than 30 percent think private insurance coverage will be eliminated. And just 36 percent think a public insurance option will put private insurance companies out of business.
In addition, only three out of 10 respondents believe the government will require the elderly to make decisions about how and when they will die.
QUOTE
When health care is for profit, it's profit first, people second. Almost 50 million people in the US without health insurance and many more with health insurance go bankrupt just trying to pay for basic health care. You have (apparently) no idea how much the 'for profit' health care companies have bloated the costs.
It is not the government that will screw this up, it's the health insurance and HMO's that will and they'll do it for profit ($12 billion).
-> just_curious: have you suffered a serious illness or health issue? I bet your insurance company will go to any lengths to drop your coverage as soon as you start to cost them money.
Most other first world countries have some form of universal health care, except the USA.
You go ahead and let the health insurance and HMO's corps etc make up your mind for you, I wouldn't say the american people are the most gullible, just controlled by the corporate leeches.
The argumentsQUOTE
Questions for thought:
When you say there are "Almost 50 million people in the US without health insurance.." and
it is claimed that the gov't. plan will not "insure" illegal aliens, then why are the illegal aliens
included when counting the 50 million uninsured?
You say "It is not the government that will screw this up, it's the health insurance and HMO's that will and they'll do it for profit ($12 billion)." I ask, can you name a gov't. run program
that is not screwed up? By screwed up I'll give the definition for the purposes of the question:
A gov't. run program that did/does not cost the taxpayers millions/billions/trillions more than what the gov't. claimed that it would.
Most other first world countries have some form of universal health care, except the USA.
...and the question is "what are Medicare and Medicaid?".
You go ahead and let the health insurance and HMO's corps etc make up your mind for you, I wouldn't say the american people are the most gullible, just controlled by the corporate leeches. ... and I question do you have a job provided by one of those corporate leeches?
I'd rather have the option of the freedom to choose what the corporate leeches have to offer
THAN be forced by the gov't. to take what THEY THINK I should PAY FOR.
QUOTE
Fact: the CBO projected costs at 1.8Trillion dollars. The curve does not bend down, but goes up.
Fact: illegal immigrants will not be denied coverage under the public option. There is no requirement anywhere in HR3200 for administrators to check for id or to follow-up on who's registering.
Fact: studies show that increased access to healthful foods, early interventions, etc, increase health outcomes in society. We can improve existing programs to meet these basic healthful requirements without introducing a public option
Fact: Obama campaigned on making health care more affordable, not mandating coverage (i.e. universalizing) it to all. He said coverage should be mandatory for children up to age 26. Whether or not we go to a single payer public option, the problem is that HR3200 will require everyone to have health insurance in 5 years with gov. mandated minimum requirements.
Fact: he said families would save 2500/yr. With a 1.8 Trillion dollar cost, this is almost an impossibility--families will be taxed somewhere to pay for this. It is not "deficit neutral."
QUOTE
The problem I have is they are lumping about 5 different things into the same pot and calling it health insurance reform.
1. The purpose of all insurance is to take very expensive very unlikely events and spread the cost out to a group that voluntarily pays premiums. Examples are your untimely death, wrecking your car, or getting cancer. Insurance companies profit by being able to calculate those risks and expenses and charge the highest premium they can. I think people confuse health care with health insurance. What we have right now is a bastardization of the two. Why use insurance when you go for a routine visit? That's like paying for car insurance that covers all minor repairs and maintenance.
2. I do favor one time of socialist health care. Emergency care. A free market doesn't work well in an emergency. If you are going to die without medical care in 5 minutes you don't have time to shop around and compare. Just like Police, Fire, EMT's are all paid for by local taxes so should Emergency Room Care. The reform I'd like to see here would allow hospitals to deny treatment for non-emergencies. Just like if you call 911 because you have a cold or the Police if you can't get it your way at the drive thru you should be fined if you show up to an Emergency Room with a non-emergency.
3. The free market can work to lower medical costs for things that you have time to shop and compare . Look at industries that don't take insurance like laser eye surgery and plastic surgery. Those costs keep going down because of the profit motive. People don't want glasses but have to pay out of pocket for the surgery. So companies design machines cheaper and cheaper to provide this service.
4. Eliminate Patents and Prescriptions on Drugs. There is no reason you should need a doctors note for a drug. Why should you have to spend $100 on a doctors visit when you know what you have? If you have had 1 ear infection you know what it feels like. You know you need the anti-biotic ear drops. The drops only cost about $20 (at least they do for my dog). Why make someone wait? Some may argue that the patent is needed for the drug makers to recoup their costs. But if you are first to market it will take 2 years for someone to reverse engineer not only the drug but the process to make it and get to market. You can recoup your profits in those 2 years. Plus if you eliminate the FDA and prescriptions you will get it to market sooner and cheaper.
5. Legal reform for drugs and doctors. The problem I have with suing drug makers is that they only sell a product. If they are selling what they claim (ie the chemicals in the bottle are what they say on the side) then they shouldn't be liable for how you use it. Just like herbs and other natural products today. You can claim this mushroom or that root helps some disease but it is up to the person and their doctor to decide if it is right or not. As long as what they are selling you is what they claim it to be.
As for doctors. Just like you can't sue police for not showing up and stopping a robbery or sue the fire department for not saving your house in a fire you shouldn't be able to sue a doctor for not saving your limb or life. If you are in an emergency where you are going to die and a doctor tries to save you but can't he shouldn't be liable. Now this again is different then in a situation where they have time to study the condition. In those cases the patient should be allowed to buy outcome based insurance for themselves. Like the insurance you can buy at an airport in case your plane crashes you should be allowed to buy your own insurance before surgery. Plus you can use those premiums as a guide to the quality of your doctor.
QUOTE
The president has correctly diagnosed the need for major health care reform in our country. The problem is that the prescription being offered by Congress is worse than the disease.
Heath care costs have been rising much faster than inflation for several years. These costs consume an ever-increasing portion of all family and business budgets, including the city government's budget. Indeed, city and state governments face an increasingly difficult time balancing the budget because of the rapid escalating cost of health care coverage.
The solution, however, isn't spending a trillion dollars and creating a new federal bureaucracy. Those who are currently satisfied with their doctor and health care may find that they have fewer options than they currently do. Rationing treatment has become the key feature in most government health care systems outside of the U.S. Ultimately, with a massive new government health insurance system, all Americans will end up with a medical system that delivers all of the compassion of the IRS and the efficiency of the building department. This is the wrong way to fix health care for our families.
Instead, major reforms that will increase competition and reduce the cost of health care, without bankrupting the taxpayers, should be instituted, including:
• Malpractice tort reform. It is estimated that nearly one-third of all medical procedures today are for "defensive medicine," to protect doctors from malpractice lawsuits. Similarly, malpractice insurance is increasingly the largest single cost most medical doctors today have to pay to continue to practice. A cap on non-economic "pain and suffering" damages at the greater of $250,000 or triple economic damages will go a long way toward reducing rising health care costs. States that have instituted malpractice tort reform have seen their health care costs rise at a slower rate than the national average. It's time for Congress to enact national medical malpractice reform.
• Interstate health insurance. Currently, 90 percent of Hawai'i residents get their health insurance from just two insurers: HMSA and Kaiser. If a Hawai'i resident wants to shop for health insurance from other major insurers like Cigna, Aetna, or United Health, you can't by law. That's nonsensical. We should allow any validly licensed health insurance company to offer health insurance in all states to increase competition and offer more choices to the public. More competition will yield greater coverage and lower medical costs.
• Individual tax deduction of health insurance. We need to fundamentally change the way we tax health insurance. Today, health insurance is largely obtained through your employer using a corporate tax deduction. There is always a market disconnect, however, when the purchaser of a product is different from the consumer, as in the health insurance market. Health insurance should instead be an individual choice with an individual tax deduction rather than a corporate tax deduction. The health insurance market should be made more similar to the home or auto insurance market where individual families, not employers, decide which insurance company to use. By allowing an individual deduction for health insurance we can make health insurance a more "normal" market and better contain out-of-control costs.
A greater portion of the U.S. economy goes to pay for health care than any other Westernized nation and too many Americans are not covered by our health care system. We need meaningful fixes that bring down the ever-escalating cost of health care without destroying the positive aspects of medicine in America. Establishing a government run "public option" and spending more money to reduce health care spending does not make sense. Creative ideas to encourage more competition and broaden the reach of health care, however, are just what the doctor ordered.
If you scanned or read those all of this, then I would love to hear your opinion.

QUOTE
Apparently, the world is going to end on December 21st, 2012. Yes, you read correctly, in some way, shape or form, the Earth (or at least a large portion of humans on the planet) will cease to exist. Stop planning your careers, don't bother buying a house, and be sure to spend the last years of your life doing something you always wanted to do but never had the time. Now you have the time, four years of time, to enjoy yourselves before… the end.
So what is all this crazy talk? We've all heard these doomsday predictions before, we're still here, and the planet is still here, why is 2012 so important? Well, the Mayan calendar stops at the end of the year 2012, churning up all sorts of religious, scientific, astrological and historic reasons why this calendar foretells the end of life as we know it. The Mayan Prophecy is gaining strength and appears to be worrying people in all areas of society. Forget Nostradamus, forget the Y2K bug, forget the credit crunch, this event is predicted to be huge and many wholeheartedly believe this is going to happen for real.
For all those 2012 Mayan Prophecy believers out there, I have bad news. There is going to be no doomsday event in 2012, and here's why…
The Mayan Calendar
So what is the Mayan Calendar? The calendar was constructed by an advanced civilization called the Mayans around 250-900 AD. Evidence for the Maya empire stretches around most parts of the southern states of Mexico and reaches down to the current geological locations of Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and some of Honduras. The people living in Mayan society exhibited very advanced written skills and had an amazing ability when constructing cities and urban planning. The Mayans are probably most famous for their pyramids and other intricate and grand buildings. The people of Maya had a huge impact on Central American culture, not just within their civilization, but with other indigenous populations in the region. Significant numbers of Mayans still live today, continuing their age-old traditions.
The Mayans used many different calendars and viewed time as a meshing of spiritual cycles. While the calendars had practical uses, such as social, agricultural, commercial and administrative tasks, there was a very heavy religious element. Each day had a patron spirit, signifying that each day had specific use. This contrasts greatly with our modern Gregorian calendar which primarily sets the administrative, social and economic dates.
Most of the Mayan calendars were short. The Tzolk'in calendar lasted for 260 days and the Haab' approximated the solar year of 365 days. The Mayans then combined both the Tzolk'in and the Haab' to form the "Calendar Round", a cycle lasting 52 Haab's (around 52 years, or the approximate length of a generation). Within the Calendar Round were the trecena (13 day cycle) and the veintena (20 day cycle). Obviously, this system would only be of use when considering the 18,980 unique days over the course of 52 years. In addition to these systems, the Mayans also had the "Venus Cycle". Being keen and highly accurate astronomers they formed a calendar based on the location of Venus in the night sky. It's also possible they did the same with the other planets in the Solar System.
Using the Calendar Round is great if you simply wanted to remember the date of your birthday or significant religious periods, but what about recording history? There was no way to record a date older than 52 years.
The end of the Long Count = the end of the Earth?
The Mayans had a solution. Using an innovative method, they were able to expand on the 52 year Calendar Round. Up to this point, the Mayan Calendar may have sounded a little archaic - after all, it was possibly based on religious belief, the menstrual cycle, mathematical calculations using the numbers 13 and 20 as the base units and a heavy mix of astrological myth. The only principal correlation with the modern calendar is the Haab' that recognised there were 365 days in one solar year (it's not clear whether the Mayans accounted for leap years). The answer to a longer calendar could be found in the "Long Count", a calendar lasting 5126 years.
I'm personally very impressed with this dating system. For starters, it is numerically predictable and it can accurately pinpoint historical dates. However, it depends on a base unit of 20 (where modern calendars use a base unit of 10). So how does this work?
The base year for the Mayan Long Count starts at "0.0.0.0.0". Each zero goes from 0-19 and each represent a tally of Mayan days. So, for example, the first day in the Long Count is denoted as 0.0.0.0.1. On the 19th day we'll have 0.0.0.0.19, on the 20th day it goes up one level and we'll have 0.0.0.1.0. This count continues until 0.0.1.0.0 (about one year), 0.1.0.0.0 (about 20 years) and 1.0.0.0.0 (about 400 years). Therefore, if I pick an arbitrary date of 2.10.12.7.1, this represents the Mayan date of approximately 1012 years, 7 months and 1 day.
This is all very interesting, but what has this got to do with the end of the world? The Mayan Prophecy is wholly based on the assumption that something bad is going to happen when the Mayan Long Count calendar runs out. Experts are divided as to when the Long Count ends, but as the Maya used the numbers of 13 and 20 at the root of their numerical systems, the last day could occur on 13.0.0.0.0. When does this happen? Well, 13.0.0.0.0 represents 5126 years and the Long Count started on 0.0.0.0.0, which corresponds to the modern date of August 11th 3114 BC. Have you seen the problem yet? The Mayan Long Count ends 5126 years later on December 21st, 2012.
When something ends (even something as innocent as an ancient calendar), people seem to think up the most extreme possibilities for the end of civilization as we know it. A brief scan of the internet will pull up the most popular to some very weird ways that we will, with little logical thought, be wiped off the face of the planet. Archaeologists and mythologists on the other hand believe that the Mayans predicted an age of enlightenment when 13.0.0.0.0 comes around; there isn't actually much evidence to suggest doomsday will strike. If anything, the Mayans predict a religious miracle, not anything sinister.
Myths are abound and seem to be fuelling movie storylines. It looks like the new Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is even based around the Mayan myth that 13 crystal skulls can save humanity from certain doom. This myth says that if the 13 ancient skulls are not brought together at the right time, the Earth will be knocked off its axis. This might be a great plotline for blockbuster movies, but it also highlights the hype that can be stirred, lighting up religious, scientific and not-so-scientific ideas that the world is doomed.
Some of the most popular space-based threats to the Earth and mankind focus on meteorite impacts, black holes, Gamma Ray Bursts from nearby galaxies, a rapid ice age and a polar (magnetic) shift. There is so much evidence against these things happening in 2012, it's shocking just how much of a following they have generated. Each of the above "threats" needs their own devoted article as to why there is no hard evidence to support the hype.
But the fact remains, the Mayan Doomsday Prophecy is purely based on a calendar which we believe hasn't been designed to calculate dates beyond 2012. Mayan archaeo-astronomers are even in debate as to whether the Long Count is designed to be reset to 0.0.0.0.0 after 13.0.0.0.0, or whether the calendar simply continues to 20.0.0.0.0
Thoughts?

Serious discussion it is, because I'm going to have some really serious real life issues. No, this is not about subordinary things like Love, no such thing as "not enough free time to play GC because my life is awesome". No. What's happening is that my financial background has fallen apart so much that soon enough I am not sure how the hell I'm going to survive. What I mean is, I'm living with my mother, she's unemployed, we sold our flat back when my parents divorced and we don't really have money left for the rent where we live now. That means, I might have to go to a dormitory, and there I won't have nearly as much internet access... And then, my existence for GC will have to come to an end, because of circumstances I cannot modify.
So, I require some advice on what possibilities I have here. What's been left unnoticed...? I don't know. I don't know what we can do. Of course, living under a bridge instead of a dorm, but that also won't save me. Also, to be frank, we don't even know about the dorm yet. Well, I'll tell ya when I get there in time.
xGhozt, get the mobile skin done if it is not. Then I'll be able to come around.

I don't know if this is news to anyone, but I was just watching the 6 o'clock news and heard that NASA is going to bomb the moon this Friday. They will send a missile along with a camera trailing behind it to send live feed of the explosion at its surface. It will be visible from Earth with a simple telescope. NASA wants to see how much water and ice comes up from the explosion with the camera. It is going to cost tax payers 79 million dollars to launch the so called "Moon Bombing" Mission. Please post your thoughts, whether it be negative or positive.
---
I found an article about it
here for more details and a video regarding a lunar base as well as other information
here.
EDIT:
I have replaced the previous link to the broadcast with XGhozt's link because it has much more information. Please note the original link was just a place holder until I found more information besides the news broadcast itself.

Well, I need some ideas for this piece of literature I'm about to write.. So throw me your ideas. What "thing" from nature best describes your feelings/personality. I'm not asking your favorite animal- it's sometimes hard to distinguish between the two. Just asking what animal/plant/element/etc. best describes you.. do with it as you may.

Mark Twain
The Lowest Animal
--------------------------------------------------
FYI:
The following selection, although written in 1896, was not published until long after his death, in a collection called Letters from the Earth (1962)
--------------------------------------------------
[essay]
I have been studying the traits and dispositions of the "lower animals" (so-called), and contrasting them with the traits and dispositions of man. I find the result humiliating to me. For it obliges me to renounce my allegiance to the Darwinian theory of the Ascent of Man from the Lower Animals; since it now seems plain to me that the theory ought to be vacated in favor of a new and truer one, this new and truer one to be named the Descent of Man from the Higher Animals.
In proceeding toward this unpleasant conclusion I have not guessed or speculated or conjectured, but have used what is commonly called the scientific method. That is to say, I have subjected every postulate that presented itself to the crucial test of actual experiment, and have adopted it or rejected it according to the result. Thus I verified and established each step of my course in its turn before advancing to the next. These experiments were made in the London Zoological Gardens, and covered many months of painstaking and fatiguing work.
Before particularizing any of the experiments, I wish to state one or two things which seem to more properly belong in this place than further along. This is in the interest of clearness. The massed experiments established to my satisfaction certain generalizations, to wit:
I. That the human race is of one distinct species. It exhibits slight variations-in color, stature, mental caliber, and so on-due to climate, environment, and so forth; but it is a species by itself, and not to be confounded with any other.
2. That the quadrupeds are a distinct family, also. This family exhibits variations-in color, size, food preferences and so on; but it is a family by itself.
3. That the other families-the birds, the fishes, the insects, the reptiles, etc.-are more or less distinct, also. They are in the procession. They are links in the chain which stretches down from the higher animals to man at the bottom.
Some of my experiments were quite curious. In the course of my reading I had come across a case where, many years ago, some hunters on our Great Plains organized a buffalo hunt for the entertainment of an English earl-that, and to provide some fresh meat for his larder. They had charming sport. They killed seventy-two of those great animals; and ate part of one of them and left the seventy-one to rot. In order to determine the difference between an anaconda and an earl-if any-I caused seven young calves to be turned into the anaconda's cage. The grateful reptile immediately crushed one of them and swallowed it, then lay back satisfied. It showed no interest in the calves, and no disposition to harm them. I tried this experiment with other anacondas; always with the same result. The fact stood proven that the difference between an earl and an anaconda is that the earl is cruel and the anaconda isn't; and that the earl wantonly destroys what he has no use for, but the anaconda doesn't. This seems to suggest that the anaconda was not descended from the earl. It also seemed to suggest that the earl was descended from the anaconda, and had lost a good deal in the transition.
I was aware that many men who have accumulated more millions of money than they can ever use have shown a rabid hunger for more, and have not scrupled to cheat the ignorant and the helpless out of their poor servings in order to partially appease that appetite. I furnished a hundred different kinds of wild and tame animals the opportunity to accumulate vast stores of food, but none of them would do it. The squirrels and bees and certain birds made accumulations, but stopped when they had gathered a winter's supply, and could not be persuaded to add to it either honestly or by chicane. In order to bolster up a tottering reputation the ant pretended to store up supplies but I was not deceived. I know the ant. These experiments convinced me that there is this difference between man and the higher animals: he is avaricious and miserly, they are not.
In the course of my experiments I convinced myself that among the animals man is the only one that harbors insults and injuries, broods over them, waits till a chance offers, then takes revenge. The passion of revenge is unknown to the higher animals.
Roosters keep harems, but it is by consent of their concubines; therefore no wrong is done. Men keep harems, but it is by brute force, privileged by atrocious laws which the other sex were allowed no hand in making. In this matter man occupies a far lower place than the rooster.
Cats are loose in their morals, but not consciously so. Man, in his descent from the cat, has brought the cat's looseness with him but has left the unconsciousness behind-the saving grace which excuses the cat. The cat is innocent, man is not.
Indecency, vulgarity, obscenity-these are strictly confined to man; he invented them. Among the higher animals there is no trace of them. They hide nothing; they are not ashamed. Man, with his soiled mind, covers himself. He will not even enter a drawing room with his breast and back naked, so alive are he and his mates to indecent suggestion. Man is "The Animal that Laughs." But so does the monkey, as Mr. Darwin pointed out; and so does the Australian bird that is called the laughing *******. No-Man is the Animal that Blushes. He is the only one that does it-or has occasion to.
At the head of this article* we see how “three monks were burnt to death" a few days ago, and a prior “put to death with atrocious cruelty." Do we inquire into the details? No; or we should find out that the prior was subjected to unprintable mutilations. Manwhen he is a North American Indian-gouges out his prisoner's eyes; when he is King John, with a nephew to render untroublesome, he uses a red-hot iron; when he is a religious zealot dealing with heretics in the Middle Ages, he skins his captive alive and scatters salt on his back; in the first Richard's time he shuts up a multitude of Jew families in a tower and sets fire to it; in Columbus's time he captures a family of Spanish Jews and-but that is not printable; in our day in England a man is fined ten shillings for beating his mother nearly to death with a chair, and another man is fined forty shillings for having four pheasant eggs in his possession without being able to satisfactorily explain how he got them. Of all the animals, man is the only one who is cruel. He is the only one that inflicts pain for the pleasure of doing it. It is a trait that is not known to the higher animals. The cat plays with the frightened mouse; but she has this excuse, that she does not know that the mouse is suffering. The cat is moderate-unhumanly moderate; she only scares the mouse, she does not hurt it; she doesn't dig its eyes, or tear off its skin, or drive splinters under its nails-man-fashion; when she is done playing with it she makes a sudden meal of it and puts it out of its trouble. Man is the Cruel Animal. He is alone in that distinction.
The higher animals engage in individual fights, but never in organized masses. Man is the only animal that deals in that atrocity of atrocities, War. He is the only one that gathers his brethren about him and goes forth in cold blood and with calm pulse to exterminate his kind. He is the only animal that for sordid wages will march out, as the Hessians did in our Revolution, and as the boyish Prince Napolean did in the Zulu war, and help to slaughter strangers of his own species who have done him no harm and with whom he has no quarrel.
Man is the only animal that robs his helpless fellow of his country-takes possession of it and drives him out of it or destroys him. Man has done this in all the ages. There is not an acre of ground on the globe that is in possession of its rightful owner, or that has not been taken away from owner after owner, cycle after cycle, by force and bloodshed.
Man is the only Slave. And he is the only animal who enslaves. He has always been a slave in one form or another, and has always held other slaves in bondage under him in one way or another. In our day he is always some man's slave for wages, and does the man's work; and this slave has other slaves under him for minor wages, and they do his work. The higher animals are the only ones who exclusively do their own work and provide their own living.
Man is the only Patriot. He sets himself apart in his own country, under his own flag, and sneers at the other nations, and keeps multitudinous uniformed assassins on hand at heavy expense to grab slices of other people's countries, and keep them from grabbing slices of his. And in the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for "the universal brotherhood of man"-with his mouth.
Man is the Religious Animal. He is the only Religious Animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion-several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself, and cuts his throat if his theology isn't straight. He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother's path to happiness and heaven. He was at it in the time of Caesars, he was at it in Mahomet's time, he was at it in the time of the Inquisition, he was at it in France a couple of centuries, he was at it in England in Mary's day, he has been at it ever since he first saw the light, he is at it today in Crete-as per the telegrams quoted above*-he will be at it somewhere else tomorrow. The higher animals have no religion. And we are told that they are going to be left out, in the Hereafter. I wonder why? It seems questionable taste.
Man is the Reasoning Animal. Such is the claim. I think it is open to dispute. Indeed, my experiments have proven to me that he is the Unreasoning Animal. Note his history, as sketched above. It seems plain to me that whatever he is he is not a reasoning animal. His record is the fantastic record of a maniac. I consider that the strongest count against his intelligence is the fact that with that record back of him he blandly sets himself up as the head animal of the lot: whereas by his own standards he is the bottom one.
In truth, man is incurably foolish. Simple things which the other animals easily learn, he is incapable of learning. Among my experiments was this. In an hour I taught a cat and a dog to be friends. I put them in a cage. In another hour I taught them to be friends with a rabbit. In the course of two days I was able to add a fox, a goose, a squirrel and some doves. Finally a monkey. They lived together in peace; even affectionately.
Next, in another cage I confined an Irish Catholic from Tipperary, and as soon as he seemed tame I added a Scotch Presbyterian from Aberdeen. Next a Turk from Constantinople; a Greek Christian from Crete; an Armenian; a Methodist from the wilds of Arkansas; a Buddhist from China; a Brahman from Benares. Finally, a Salvation Army Colonel from Wapping. Then I stayed away two whole days. When I came back to note results, the cage of Higher Animals was all right, but in the other there was but a chaos of gory odds and ends of turbans and fezzes and plaids and bones and flesh-not a specimen left alive. These Reasoning Animals had disagreed on a theological detail and carried the matter to a Higher Court.
[/end essay]
--------------------------------------------------
For many centuries "the common brotherhood of man" has been urged-on Sundays-and "patriotism" on Sundays and weekdays both. Yet patriotism contemplates the opposite of a common brotherhood.
Woman's equality with man has never been conceded by any people, ancient or modern, civilized or savage.
Mark Twain has a very valid point. Man is the lower animal... ethically... in a sense.

I had fun watching this video, but it really gets you thinking. Is the universe, and everything that comprises it really infinity? Is the smallest particles of the atoms that make up everything we see just another universe contained within it? No one will ever know...
So what are your thoughts on this concept? I've always imagined the universe like this, an infinite loop. It's nice to see a high-end video produced that shows exactly this.

Well lately if you have noticed or not, (can careless) I have grown inactive and there are a couple of reasons why. Well first I don't like Ghoztcraft, why you ask? Because Ghoztcraft is your typical flame site every thread I have visited consisted in flame/whos more smarter/spam. Admins do nothing about this and well it used to be funny but as time progressess things get old.
Another reason is all the half decent members or members I like have left Ghoztcraft or grown inactive (Zar/Deadman/Protoman/Zhuiden). But that's not even half the problem what I can't stand about Ghoztcraft (which pink hair made me somewhat realize even though she/he is still an idiot) is the poor moderation. Yes you have 3 admins (that I know of) but none of them do anything but flame/spam/never post (once again far as I know of). So why bother keeping them as admin? Your moderation team makes "gamethreat" (new bwhacks.com) look like the best thing alive.
Now most likely I'm gonna get flammed. "Oh deaththekid your such a fucking idiot ghoztcraft>all gtfo omgzors" ya ok I didn't ask whos better, actually I didn't ask ANYTHING I just made a statement to why I have grown inactive and how I recently felt about Ghoztcraft.
~Good day.

Well, I know awhile back I created a topic saying I was back and then, didn't get back on until just now. Just haven't thought about getting on you know? Messing with my iPod touch and doing nothing has got me occupied. Ah, I remember when Starcraft was my life, good times. I used to come on this site a lot. Talking with members, viewing new posts, all the fun of a gaming forum. Not that anyone cares, and I do not expect anyone's pity, but, Life Sucks. Been really shitty lately, been depressed a lot. Girl problems, cutting myself, yea it is all bad.
Well, I'm sure no one wants to hear this, me rambling on about my life; I'm just someone on a gaming forum. Just wanted to say I am truly going to try to stick on this forum and become an active poster again. Well, hello..err.. again all!

I wanted to open a topic to kind of bring some awareness to everyone about the recent events. There's really a big war going on right now over the internet and our freedom to use it how we choose to. I also wanted to get your opinion on the whole concept of net neutrality. So, here's some recent events that have been going on, and some articles you should read. The future of the internet as we know if today really depends on us being aware of it's current state.
Time Warner creates plans for bandwith caps, quickly denied by the users.

So, do you think this is an issue we should be interested in? Do you know how this effects you? Have you experienced any service degradation due to the lack of net neutrality with your ISP?

Well people.. I've been thinking about doing it for years. And I've always loved seeing compiz make everything look all awesome. And I finally did it. My desktop has a great nvidia video card for ubuntu. My wireless works, everything is working perfectly. I've still got a lot to learn though.. I just installed it on one of my other HD's on my desktop.
So far, I've got the basic necessities covered. Firefox (setup, synced, configured), thuinderbird, drivers, basic applications.. notepad++... dropbox.. jing.. a dock.. etc.. Once I get everything setup how I like it and I figure out how to do all this other shit, I will focus on getting the bigger applications. Like Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Flash. But ..oh and Pidgin, since that runs on Ubuntu that was really easy to copy over my plugins, chat logs and everything else.
Does anyone have any good applications or utilities I should check out? I've already got a theme setup.. sorta, not sure if I did it correctly. But so far everything seems to be coming along nicely. This OS is SO smooth on my desktop it's amazing. And, I plan on getting apache and mysql setup because I was running my local web server on my windows desktop..
Anyway, I just had to say it..

What i am asking is for all you pro hackers to help me. If some one completes the following two questions for me following the teachers request you will get the rs account. First person to do it gets it. But i need it within the next hour or so. At the latest 1 hour and 30 minutes.
here is the question
CODE
Exercises in Sorting Objects
Assignment 1:
The Tallest in the Class
Each student in Mrs. Chapman’s class measured themselves using a metre stick and wrote down their height. The problem was that each student used a different unit of measurement, either metres(m), decimeteres(dm), centimetres(cm), or millimetres(mm). Your job is to find out the names of the tallest five people in the class.
The first line of the input file (tall.txt) will contain an integer n, 0<n<=35, representing the number of students in Mrs. Chapman’s class. The next n lines will contain the names, heights and unit of measurement of the students. Each item is separated by a single space. The heights will be a real value and the unit of measurement will be either m, dm, cm or mm.
The output to the console will contain five lines of data. It will list the names of the five tallest students in order. Use the insertion sort method.
If students have identical heights, their names should be listed in alphabetical order.
Sample Input
12
Jim 1.45 m
Sally 187 cm
Joey 1064 mm
Roel 15.23 dm
Karl 134 cm
Melanie 18.9 dm
Jill 1.54 m
Sam 133 cm
Joel 1877 mm
Roger 17.83 dm
Karen 178 cm
Marnie 17.9 dm
Sample Output

Assignment 2:
London Knights (Revisited)
The London Knights hockey team, last year’s Memorial Cup champions, has a roster of several players.
Many types of statistics are kept on the players, including games played (GP), goals (G), assists (A), points (PTS), plus/minus (+/-), penalty in minutes (PIM), power-play goals (PPG) and short-handed goals (SHG) .
# Lastname Firstname GP G A PTS +/- PIM PPG SHG
26 Aarssen Scott 38 2 8 10 14 8 0 0
10 Beaulieu Josh 31 10 8 18 11 77 4 1

29 Davis Matt 6 1 0 1 0 19 0 0
28 Dennis Adam 34 0 2 2 0 22 0 0
The input file (knights.txt) will contain statistics for the players of the London Knights. The first line of the input file will contain N, the number of players in the input file. The next N lines will contain the statistics, as listed above, for each player. Each
statistic is separated from the other by a single space.
The output will be to the console. It will contain five lines of data. You will give the end user the choice of listing the top 5 of the following:
players with
1. Most Goals (G)
2. Most Assists (A)
3. Lowest Plus/Minus (+/-)
4. Most Penalty in Minutes (PIM)
5. Most Power Play Goals (PPG)
Sample Input

CODE
Sorting Objects
Sorting Arrays of Objects:
With an array of objects, you can run comparisons of any field you want.
if (arCPlayer[b].PTS>arCPlayer[i].PTS)
//You can then switch full objects using a temporary object as follows:
tCPlayer=arCPlayer[iMin];
arCPlayer[iMin]=arCPlayer[i];
arCPlayer[i]=tCPlayer;
Here, you can see that we can compare the "PTS" within the array of players. Switching the two objects around requires a temporary object that I named "tCPlayer". Here, all fields within the object are being moved around.
BTW if you dont have java or an ide. or the jdk heres a free bundle.

There has been so little digging deep conversation in this board. Don't get me wrong, the topics still mostly fall in Serious Discussion, but not the 'deep' things I would prefer it were.
So I will start a topic for that. Tell everyone what you Life's goal(s) is/are.
My Life's goal, I only figured it out late 2008. I want to make something(s) that people will buy and will like, even change something in their lives. This is why i constantly make up stories to try and write books. Bringing joy to others through writing, game-making(which I am limited to RPG Maker) makes me happy. It gives me a warm feeling in my heart.
I wrote my first 'real' Naruto Fanfiction on fanfiction.net last year. I got reviews from quite a bit of people that liked it. I even had a couple PM(Anonymous Email) me urging me to continue. It felt so good to bring entertainment/joy to them indirectly. But, of course, my muse withered and died and my work on that story stopped...Demons and Angels by HG-Bounder-X(HGBounderX) if anybody cares. I even broke the 100,000 word barrier, one of my lofty goals.
What I really want, though, it something bigger than a simple story on a website. I want to write a book that people will read and like. My description and word variation skills are way too lacking for doing that any time soon, but I still try all the time, building up my vocabulary and accelerating my imaginative process to write faster.
I have made plans for roughly 7 books, 4 of which I actually began to write, 1 of which I typed up 126 pages in MS Word. I have created plans for 25+ Naruto fanfics, about twelve to fifteen of which I began writing on, 3 of which I began posting on FF.Net.
For those of you who don't know.

Ok. I posted this in the serious discussion, because i want a serious fucking discussion. This is not a troll or some bullshit.
As each day is passing... I feel my sanity slipping away... I'm having more and more psychopathic thoughts.. I feel as if the only way I'm going to be happy is if i satisfy these thoughts. I don't know wtf it is, or wtf is wrong with me. But, I feel as if this is what a serial killer goes through, before they become a serial killer. I mean, I feel as if I don't care... As if I don't give a fuck what the consequences to killing would be, as long as i get the satisfaction of them dying.
Im going insane guys. I don't like this.. I think I need help=/ But I don't want to talk to anybody in my life.

So here is the question, in terms of general secular moral restraints, may we reshape human nature better to meet our own interests as we define them or in other words is Genetic Engineering of Humans ethical?
The ability of Inheritable Genetic Modifications (IGM) to shape the genetic inheritance of future generations raises major ethical concerns. IGM might change attitudes toward the human person, the nature of human reproduction, and parent-child relationships. IGM could exacerbate prejudice against persons with disabilities. The introduction of inheritable genetic modifications in a society with differential access to health care would pose significant justice issues and could introduce new, or magnify existing, inequalities.

"The only reason it has taken so long is that the record industry has been trying to level the playing field, by giving away DRM free to everyone else, but even that hasn't dented Apple's share," said Mr Mulligan.
"Ultimately, what we're going to end up with is a new form of DRM. The more you pay, the less DRM you get bolted onto your music. Premium music will be DRM free, the cheaper it gets, the more shackles are attached," he added.
a few questions
1- Will this influence any thoughts of you purchasing/ceasing to purchase music via iTunes?
2- Do you think this will lead to the fall of DRM?
3- and some of your thoughts on the DRM act.

So, Obama's finally been inaugurated, and the start of his 4 year term starts today. Now that he's said his inauguration speech, what do you think if his ideas and policies now? He's touched on pretty much every single major problem we face today. From the national issues like rising gas prices, slumping economy and money spending, to the international issues. Such as the war on terrorism, global warming, and energy consumption.
