I Have Worries

this is about skype. i kept calling blank calls to these 2 numbers 800522**** and 888522**** using skype

one of them called the police twice and stuff and i talked to XGhozt about this and got confused, and read this article:

The 16 law enforcement officers were heavily armed and expecting a confrontation with three AK-47 wielding intruders Wednesday night when they responded to an apartment on the 2200 block of North Main Street in Salinas.

When they got to the residence, though, no gunmen were in sight - just a bewildered family.

The officers had been lured to the apartment by a computer-using prankster in Chicago who engaged them in a practical joke known as "swatting," Salinas police said. The idea is to make a phony 911 call that prompts a SWAT team to respond to what police believe is a dangerous situation.

"From a personal standpoint, I'm angry someone would try this and find humor in it," Cmdr. Robert Eggers said Thursday.

In addition to police, the hoax targeted a 15-year-old boy who lives at the apartment and whom the prankster pretended to be while calling 911, police said. Instead of a phone, which can be traced, the caller used Skype, a computer software program for making calls over the Internet, police said.

Before emergency dispatchers got the phony call, the 15-year-old had

been on the Internet chatting with the person in Chicago and had given him some personal information, police said.

About 7:25 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, the computer-user in Illinois made the fake 911 call, claiming three men with AK-47s were trying to get into the apartment, police said. While police were en route, the caller contacted them again, saying he was hiding in the closet and that the gun-toting intruders were looking for him.

The software made emergency dispatchers believe the call was coming from the boy's phone. The teen had given the person in Chicago some of his personal information, unwittingly making the hoax possible, police said.

When officers arrived, they escorted the 15-year-old, his mother and his sister out of the residence before realizing there was no intruder, Eggers said.

IP address key to trace

The boy voluntarily surrendered his computer, and police technical experts will try and find the prankster's Internet provider address on it, police said.

Eggers said "swatting" is a growing national phenomenon among computer hackers and jokesters. In most cases, the computer-savvy individuals who make the calls do so because they don't believe they can be traced, he said.

"They don't realize how dangerous it is," Eggers said. "What they think is a juvenile prank is really something serious, because it ties up police resources."

During Wednesday night's incident, all 15 Salinas police officers on duty at the time and one sheriff's deputy responded to the apartment, Eggers said.

"Swatters" often are caught and arrested after police determine their IP address, he said.

The 15-year-old did not know police had been called to his apartment until the person in Chicago wrote to him online and asked if he heard sirens outside, Eggers said.

"No one in the apartment knew what was going on," he said. "They were shocked, but they've been cooperative with us."

Pizzeria targeted, too

Police believe the person behind the hoax is male and either in his late teens or early 20s. After the phony calls, police said, the same person actually called the Police Department - identifying himself as the 15-year-old - and asked why there was no response to the apartment, Eggers said.

When told officers had responded, he laughed and hung up. The person also placed several other 911 calls using the boy's address and ordered $127 worth of pizza from a local pizzeria, having it delivered to the boy's address, police said.

The case has been turned over to police detectives and the department's computer forensics unit.

The caller could face charges of reporting a false emergency, Eggers said.

Because the caller appears to have been in Chicago, Eggers said, police will investigate whether federal charges would be in order and if the FBI or U.S. Attorney's Office should get involved.

Eggers said computer-users should be cautious when giving personal information to someone they barely know.

"You might be giving them your information, and the next thing you know, the police could be at your door," he said.

and me and 951 were having fun on skype. but im afraid if im going to get caught even through skype. now ive been through many forums over the internet and heard skype isnt traceable or its possible but too hard and too expensive to trace..... my head is going is crazy. need answers. im scared if police catches me. btw, me and 951 kept calling those 2 number with skype (thinking skype is not traceable) but i was calling them repeatedly for like 6 hours like i had no life. need answers!!

Skype is traceable. Don't let someone tell you otherwise.

If it was a prank call and as long as you didn't threaten them then there's probably nothing to worry about. Police have more important things to deal with like rapists and murderers.

If you are caught and under 18, you'll probably get anything from a warning to a few hours of community service.

Skype isn't traceable.... But shit like this will make it so they start to make it traceable... Sigh.

Skype IS traceable. It uses a technology that is called voice over IP (VOIP). It's the same technology that the company Vonage uses when you sign up for their phone service. Obviously a call on Vonage is traceable so a call using the same technology (VOIP through Skype) would also be traceable.

That's one reason why it would obviously be traceable.

im using a proxy and a random port along with it. if the police are ever to trace it, the ip would be fake and ill never get caught.. thats my hypothesis. im just saying. is that true?

Everything that you do online is traceable. If you think it is not then you are lying to yourself. It doesn't matter if you think that you are a good hacker and they can't trace your steps. Even if you laced 30 different ip addresses that put you in locations in different areas of the world, they would eventually find the source, and that means they would also find you.

I call bullshit on that story! You can't make emergency calls using skype, it's against their terms and the software prevents you from doing so!

so the police will still take action even though i made blank calls through skype?

btw, i kept calling these 2 numbers for like 7 hours for the past 2-3 days because im bored as hell

Prank calling is fairly legal as long as you don't harass the person (calling multiple times, etc.) or threaten them.

the 800 522 **** number (apparently its a landline number) tends to call police. the other number is fun since they tried tracing me, it was unavailable and they gave up thinking there is no hope. so 2nd number is fun.

Skype isn't tracable. If it is, I should have been getting calls from the FBI by now. I mean, I called them a good 7 times with gun soundbords.

http://forum.skype.com/lofiversion/index.php/t25688.html read the 1st post of that page.

Ive searched the forums and have not really found any topics on "Prank calls". I have been making prank calls since I was a little kid. Gotten in trouble a few tI'mes also when I used less caution as a youth. I ran across skype a year ago and saw a great opportunity to start making prank calls without being traced. Wow I love it.

I usually call wal-mart or a few 5 star hotels around my area using sound boards. Holly shit I have harassed the shit out of these places and have yet to see any backlash. Ive been threatened with the police, that I'm being traced. I think once a hotel transfered me to the local police department and they just eventually hung up on me after trying to trace the call.

The "Sargent Hartman Full Metal Jacket" and Howard Stern Boards are the best it seems to me. Yes it sounds childish maybe but I'm a big grownup kid.

So for you people who are going to flame and tell me how childish I am, or I need to grow up, or some type of pseudo-parental bullshit. You can EAD. I'm not talking to you. I can not be the only person who uses SkypeOut to make prank calls anonymously.

I have some questions and maybe someone can give me some answers.

1. Is skype really untraceable? 2. How can I route the sound board through the audio out on calls? Ive done this with limited success by tricking various recording and mixing programs but the sound quality is usually destroyed , distorted, I get a horrible echo, or feedback. The same question goes for a voice clock program Ive had the same limited success.

I saw a question for the voice cloak once and some dip-shit answered with. "What do you need to do that for? To make prank calls?" The answer is yes thats what he needed it for and so f***ing what.

Like I said I cant be the only one with these questions so speak up if your like me and like to use SkypeOut for pranks.

this is how i get really confused

In theory, it takes time to communicate with skype and get the information needed to trace back to the user. First they need the IP, then they need the ISP, then the ISP has to release information to the FBI, and then they can pin point who exactly you are. But you're probably low priority and it doesn't seem worth it.

i dont know about me being low priority because i kept calling the 800 number for like 3 days and like 3-7 hours a day. but its all only blank calls

so XGhozt, what about using a proxy. i set up a proxy that leads to finland. i set it up for my skype and now im under a proxy. will it not work or will give me a very good chance that i will never get caught?

EDIT: ok. i found out what skypeOut is...

To use Skypeout you need to purchase credit so there is a link there with user and credit details.

All Skypeout calls are logged so I assume only need to interrogate a database to determine who called where at what time.

What do other SIP provider do?

i assume that i dOnt have skype credits which means i dont have SkypeOut which means my calls are not logged and i cant be traced...........

as poply said they can just trace your ip threw the proxy..... -.- they aren't stupid dude the only way to be come pretty untracable would be to connect to every proxy in the world.... and if you did 1) your internet would be so slow it wouldn't be worth it. 2) some one without a life could still trace you

so all in all no matter what you will be traced but your low priority so just keep it like that and you should be good =/ as long as you don't do anything to stupid....

in other news i just found out my ISP doesn't support VOIP... idk why....

Skype is traceable, period. However, it's time-consuming and painfully expensive to do so. And that's why no one does and everyone says it is traceable..

It IS traceable, but no one gives a shit about tracing it.

The only way to be completely anonymous is if you use PRQ.SE's VPN service. They log absolutely nothing. Not even server logs.
