Install all of these and configure them all. Make sure you run a system scan with avg and ad-aware at least once a week. Post any questions here. P. S. this is my first turtorial so dont get mad if you dont understand it. Edit: forgot to mention in Zonealarm go to Firewall and click Internet security: High if you dont ur computer will be visible on the network Share this post Link to post
Major Zhuinden 128 Posted June 18, 2008 ZoneAlarm is the biggest piece of shit you can ever encounter, or so I've heard. Even Kerio Personal Firewall is better than that, I think. If you want protection, turn on Windows Firewall. Duh. Btw, that's not Ad-aware. http://pcforum.hu/letoltes/1001/Ad-aware+SE+6+0.html This is ad-aware. The newer versions (2007 and 2008) eat your comp, so they suck. This is slightly newer, and is still the good series. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Popu...-Personal.shtml Share this post Link to post
Fc3sZero 78 Posted June 18, 2008 Good post. Spybot: Search and Destroy is a good program too for spyware. Share this post Link to post
Azu 24 Posted June 18, 2008 a good firewall; tell me if u know a better 1 Jetico (or Comodo if you don't want advanced configuration) NOD32 for anti virus (an anti virus isn't really needed if you have a decent firewall and you're careful, though) Ad-aware or spybot search&destroy for anti adware (see above notes) Share this post Link to post
Crafterz 31 Posted June 18, 2008 Zone Alarm works just fine, don't put it down. http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/cat...ee_firewall.jsp AVG is a great system, because it has a massive definitions database. Also, because it now has ewido included in its systems. http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe Ad-aware is great. http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2008/3000...cdlPid=10844457 Instead of Spyblaster, use spybot search and destroy. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html) HijackThis should be added (hint hint) CleanUp!: http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ - Clears out the entire systems of .tmp files and unneeded files.(Great for system upkeep) Just keep in mind. All of these tools, once infected, if it is a bad infection, which is becoming extremely common nowadays, then these tools will not remove it. It will require manual work, or in some cases, a special fix. A simple list of these is http://free.grisoft.com/ww.virus-removal There are many more, but this is a basic list of common ones, and these are trusted by grisoft. One say, I'll make a massive tutorial on Virus and Malware Protection, then one on removal. Share this post Link to post
Suteki 114 Posted June 18, 2008 What about Spyware Doctor. Is the firewall one/spyware one compatible? Because I know Spyware Doctor has it's own firewall stuff. I don't want "cross protection" if you know what I mean. Share this post Link to post
Crafterz 31 Posted June 18, 2008 Spyware Doctor costs money, so I usually don't include it in my discussions. But I do believe that it won't cross itself. Firewall is normally for outside connections to the computer coming in. Or inside connections going out. Spyware tends to be what you have on your computer, infected or not. Union1 33 Posted June 18, 2008 Its great that your all commenting but as i said this is my first turtorial and second i mentioned that this is using common sense so I didnt include a huge list of things. i didnt include Hijackthis because its not self explanitory; not for neebs 2. I included all the things that are free fast 2 get and easy to configure. Oh and Windows firewall sucks ass. I am a newb in all types of programming and even I can get past windows firewall, so dont use it. Share this post Link to post
Azu 24 Posted June 18, 2008 Hmm do you really mean that? I don't like it much since it's not very configurable, but I think you're lying. Here go ahead and try to do anything to me, I turned off everything except windows firewall. 67.53.37.218 Share this post Link to post
SasukeStorm 0 Posted June 19, 2008 This is a perfect combo and Its not too hard to use AVG Trial plus Spyware Blaster + Zone Alarm = AVG Full Version and everyone knows thats the best Share this post Link to post
LoyaL 68 Posted June 21, 2008 LoL owned. <sarcasm>I love wanna-bs</sarcasm> Zone alarm is a terrible, terrible, terrible program. Share this post Link to post
LoyaL 68 Posted June 21, 2008 Then you must be a noob, noob, noob. It is a resource hog, does a terrible job, and is impossible to remove. Don't tell people to get it. Edit: Don't want to flame now.. Share this post Link to post
Mudkiepz 81 Posted June 21, 2008 AVG - Fine Zone Alarm - Sux, ive tried it once, i had to uninstall it manually in safemode. Spy Blaster - Whatever Share this post Link to post
HookE 0 Posted June 27, 2008 I don't use any fire walls. I do use Ad-aware from time to time. I know enough about computers to know how to disable most malware. You can enable or disable startup services and programs on the windows OS by running msconfig. Share this post Link to post
Azu 24 Posted June 27, 2008 Assuming that none of the attempts against your IP(which everyone you enter a game of Starcraft gains access to) are intended to do any damage, and assuming that whatever it is that they do install onto your computer is very poorly written, and assuming that you notice it, yes, that will work just fine. If the goal is actually fuck up your computer though, or if the person who hacked you doesn't fail horribly, then you'll be kind of screwed. Share this post Link to post

Because it hasn't happened to me yet :o. I don't know much about the starcraft exe so I can't say anything about it. But I don't think starcraft would allow other computers to connect to the host computer unless actually hosting a server. Share this post Link to post
Azu 24 Posted June 27, 2008 Not through starcraft.exe, no. Through the TCP/IP protocol. Share this post Link to post
HookE 0 Posted June 27, 2008 (edited) Not through starcraft.exe, no. Through the TCP/IP protocol. Perhaps. But I doubt anyone would take the time to find a vulnerability. Edit: Unless the hacker is determined :o Edited June 27, 2008 by HookE Share this post Link to post
Azu 24 Posted June 27, 2008 If people didn't get hacked there would be no such thing as personal firewalls. Share this post Link to post
