XGhozt 410 Posted January 25, 2008 Charter error deletes 14,000 email accounts About 14,000 Charter Communications' customers had their Charter e-mail accounts deleted on Monday due to a technical error during routine maintenance of e-mail accounts, a Charter spokeswoman said Thursday. Charter's Anita Lamont said the company typically performs routine maintenance on email accounts that have gone unused for more than three months and during this process a technical error occurred that deleted some 14,000 active e-mail accounts. Thus, all e-mails for those accounts had been cleared and lost. Lamont said about 1,000 Missouri customers and about 300 in Illinois were affected by the error. To remedy the situation, Charter is automatically applying a $50 credit on the next bills of those customers affected. Lamont said Charter is also offering free installation of its home networking for one month. Charter's Home Networking gives users the ability to connect up to five computers in a home. Lamont said Charter will change its account deletion policies. It will continue to perform routine maintenance on unused e-mail accounts but rather than immediately deleting them, the company will back up the accounts on another server for an undetermined period of time before permanently deleting them. St. Louis-based Charter Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: CHTR) is the nation's third-largest cable television provider, and also provides digital video programming and high-speed Internet access.
