a render is a picture, liek all the characters in my sigs are renders, try to find a vg game character or something,i dont liek to do RL(not good at that yet)i dont know many good sites for renders. look around graphics forums for em. but a badic is www.gamerenders.com its pretty bad but there a a few good renders there.

it can be a real person, i don't know if he's ever worked or used real objects in a signature but i'm sure its not too different than cartoon characters.. anyways, yes it can be a real person and if i'm not mistaken, your current avatar picture would work fine.
